World Youth Chess Championship : Girish Koushik begins with a win

Antalya (Turkey): World Under-10 chess champion Girish Koushik won his first-round game of the 2007 World Youth chess championship in Anatalya, Turkey on Sunday. Sixty two Indians are competing in this annual championship.

In the u-18 girls’ category, R. Preethi scored a win over Aliva Homa of Iran, while P. Uthra won over Inaz Emhemed of Libya in the u-16 girls’ section.

C.R. Varsha beat Kyrgizstan’s Nur lantysy Shahozi.

P. Preethi (u-8 girls) and Vidit Gujarathi (u-14) got free points as their opponents did not turn up.

Girish Koushik beat Kantharali Onat of Turkey. India’s first-round losers have been only a few so far. The losers were Revanth Reddy, M.R. Lalith Babu and Pranav Shetty.

Among u-18 girls, second seed Kiran Manisha Mohanty beat Victoria Avdeeva and in the u-14, S.P. Sethuraman beat Jonathan Tordeur of Switzerland. Arjun Bharat beat a Jordanian player in the under-8 section and Mehar Chinna Reddy won his first-round game in the u-14.

Priyanka Kumari of Jharkand beat Nitan Kuk of Slovakia, while Kotepalli Sai Nirupama beat L.A. Crouse of South Africa.

The championship got off to a chaotic start 20 minutes behind schedule. Nearly 2,000 players and accompanying persons waited outside the venue for long.

There were many errors in the pairing lists as the organisers probably lack knowledgeable arbiters.

It is one of the biggest events of its kind in the world, the starting point for new chess talent, a gathering of young chess players, 1450 of them from 103 countries around the globe. The tournament in twelve separate categories is being held in twelve age groups for boys and girls. A warm welcome awaited us on our arrival in the Turkish Mediterranean town of Kemer-Antalya. The World Youth Chess Championship 2007 is taking place in Kemer-Antalya, Turkey, between November the 17th, 2007 (arrival) and November the 29th, 2007 (departure). There are seperate groups for girls and for boys, under 8, under 10, under 12, under 14, under 16 and under 18 years old.

The organisers, the Turkish Chess Federation, has put together "one of the most professional competitions in the history of chess for the world youth championships". A total of 1450 players from 103 countries arrived in time for round one (two delegations are still expected), with more than a thousand accompanying parents, trainers, VIPs, TCF stgaff, journalists, etc. making a total of 2600 people, who are staying in the three official hotels, Limra, Alinda and Sailor's Beach. The numbers make this event the second largest in the country's history – certainly the biggest event staged with a single sport.
